Gunnar Hökmark on a European broadband strategy
Gunnar Hökmark on a European broadband strategy
"In the year of 1996 we saw the first modern use emerge of Internet and Broadband. A very odd thing called World Wide Web became known as some sort of a hypermodern phenomenon. Some said this was a trend that would be replaced by other trends, because you couldn't sit in front of a computer all day, they said. Ten years later we can say two things for sure. The first one is - that they were wrong, very wrong. And the second one is - that is a good thing that these persons were not in control of the future of the Internet."

Kroes wants broadband Internet for all Europeans by 2013
European Commissioner Neelie Kroes (Digital Agenda) on Monday presented plans for a common EU approach on ultra-fast broadband and mobile networks. She announced that the European Commission has adopted a Recommendation indicating to national telecoms regulators how they should regulate third-party competitive access to ultra-fast fibre networks (also known as 'next generation access' -- NGA -- networks) that bring high-speed broadband connections to homes and workplaces. Regulators should apply the new guidance in their daily decision making as soon as the text has been published in the EU's Official Journal. Under the telecoms Framework Directive (2002/21/EC) they are obliged to take "utmost account of the Commission's Recommendation, justifying any departure from it. The Recommendation provides regulatory clarity to telecom operators, ensuring an appropriate balance between the need to encourage investment and the need to safeguard competition. It will help to stimulate investment in competitive high-speed broadband networks, which is a key objective of the Commission's Digital Agenda for Europe and Europe 2020 strategy. The Recommendation forms part of a package of broadband measures.

Application services include wide-area wireless voice telephone, mobile Internet access, video calls and mobile TV, all in a mobile environment. Recent 3G releases, often denoted 3.5G and 3.75G, also provide mobile broadband access of several Mbit/s to smartphones and mobile modems in laptop computers. In December 2007, 190 3G networks were operating in 40 countries and 154 HSDPA networks were operating in 71 countries, according to the Global Mobile Suppliers Association (GSA). In Asia, Europe, Canada and the USA, telecommunication companies use W-CDMA technology with the support of around 100 terminal designs to operate 3G mobile networks. Roll-out of 3G networks was delayed in some countries by the enormous costs of additional spectrum licensing fees. (See Telecoms crash.) The license fees in some European countries were particularly high, bolstered by government auctions of a limited number of licenses and sealed bid auctions, and initial excitement over 3G's potential. The 3G standard is perhaps well ...

Broadband Internet via Satellite in your vehicle! Available now from RoadPro
Broadband Internet via Satellite in your vehicle! Available now from RoadPro
This video looks at internet via satellite, how it works, what it can do and the different options that are available. We currently offer 2 choices. We have a fully-automatic system from Crystop and another semi-automatic one from iPcopter. Although the systems work in a very different way, the end result is the same - broadband internet, in your vehicle, almost anywhere in Western Europe. The iPcopter system, being semi-automatic rather than fully automatic, requires a little manual adjustment to get it set up. You'll see in the video that it's really not that difficult and because of this it costs up to 55% less than other internet-enabled dishes. This makes it one of the cheapest 'internet via -satellite' systems on the market. Both systems are available now, call us on 01327 312233 or visit our website www.roadpro.co.uk for more information.

Orlando Ayala on the importance of broadband
Orlando Ayala on the importance of broadband
Mr. Orlando Ayala Corporate Vice President, Chairman Emerging Markets Microsoft Corporation. ----------------------- T ranscript ----------------------- The power of technology to drive a country's competitiveness is broadly understood and accepted. According to a 2009 report by the World Economic Forum, raising broadband penetration in emerging markets to levels currently in Western Europe could add 300-420 billion dollars in GDP and create 10-14 million new jobs. Information Technology infrastructure, and specifically universal access to sufficient, affordable broadband connectivity is integral to strengthening the local economy and ensuring a sustainable future for individuals and businesses. These technology trends offer an unprecedented opportunity for governments, businesses and citizens to work more efficiently, streamline workflows and services, and ultimately create a more inclusive society. We're still near the beginning of connecting the world and we collectively need to take a broader and bolder view of how technology can help society thrive. As connectivity optimizes how we work, learn, access healthcare, entertainment and other services, broadband access is a must-have for individuals to reap the benefits. Innovation and partnerships built on a strong IT foundation can improve access to quality services for all. Two trends stand out as great opportunities for industry and government to work together: Cloud Computing and White Spaces. With continued ...

The importance of getting broadband deployed in the US and the EU
US Ambassador to the EU William Kennard on the fundamental importance of getting broadband deployed to people in the US and the EU and its benefits. Open Days 2010, organized by the Committee of the Regions in Brussels - workshop "Bridging the Digital Divide", October 5. US Ambassador to the EU William E. Kennard participated in the Committee of the regions "Open Days" on October 5, 2010. "Open Days" is the annual flagship event of European regions and cities which gathers thousands of regional and local politicians in Brussels. In a keynote speech on "Bridging the Digital Divide" Ambassador Kennard, former Chairman of the US Federal Communications Commission, presented the US historical experience and best practices while encouraging EU implementation of key policies to integrate the EU digital market. "Not having access to broadband is a liability," he stated pointing out that those who speak the language of technology will have access to greater opportunities than those who do not. Transcription: There's no question, Barack Obama would not be President today if he didn't understand the power of technology. He basically harnessed the power of social networking tools to create the most effective presidential campaign using technology in the history of the world. So he has brought this love of technology and appreciation of its importance to government. When you look at what we're doing in the United States today, the Federal Communications Commission has put out a very ...
